Hole 8Southern Dunes golf course was designed by Steve Smyers, and is unusual for Florida in that it is built on a hill and has 100 feet of elevation changes. The course has won multiple awards, for example 4½ stars (out of 5) from Golf Digest Places to Play (2002-03).

The course has fast, undulating greens with more that 150 bunkers of varying shapes and sizes. There are various other hazards of shrubs and trees, but little water. Each hole has 5 Tees (Black, Blue, White, Yellow and Red) to indicate yardage and slope, if you use the Black Tee's the total distance is 7,227 yards, Blue is 6,803 yards, White 6,298 yards, Yellow 5,633 yards and Red 4,987. The course gives golfers of all abilities and handicaps the choice of a distance to match their game.

Yardage guides are available which provide aerial views of each hole, plus tips to help save strokes. The scorecards provide diagrams of each green with depth and pin placements.

SOUTHERN DUNES - A great golfing holiday location close to Disney

Are there any restrictions on playing golf at Southern Dunes?

It is a public course (despite being Championship standard) so as long as tee times are available you can play. It is worth booking a few days in advance to make sure you can play at the right time. The practice facilities are excellent - a grass driving range (with decent balls), several putting and chipping greens and practice pitching and bunker areas. If you just want to practice, buy a bucket of balls and spend some time working on all aspects of your game. The staff are helpful and friendly and offer a good standard of lessons. Southern Dunes often offer twilight rates and 36 hole rates and despite the championship course rating, offer reasonable green fees to all visitors.
